After all the testing, all the meetings and all the practice, it was time to put the ball in the air. Ultimately the East All-Stars prevailed coming from behind to beat the West 24-16 in the 2nd Annual Russell Athletic HBCU All-Star Bowl.
The West All-Stars came out swinging this year after losing the inaugral game in Montgomery, AL in 2009. They obviously had something to prove. Behind the quarterback play Josh Boudreaux, the West pulled out to a 14-0 lead in the first half.
Broudreaux lead all quarterbacks on 8 of 20 passing for 142 yards, one TD and one INT. DeAngelo Branch, RB, Norfolk State was the workhorse for the East All-Stars, gaining 72 yards on seven carries with a touchdown.
But is was the East All-Star defense that shut down the West in the second half. Elizabeth City State, DE, Jenkins sealed the deal late in the fourth quarter when he sacked QB Josh Boudreaux causing a fumble. The fumble was picked up by Florida A&M, DT, Kendrick Washington and returned 20 yards for a touchdown.
The game had all of the excitement of a black college classic with Grambling's World Famed Tiger Marching Band and Alabama State's Mighty Marching Hornets performing at halftime. The weather was not pretty in Atlanta and that may have led to the light attendance but rapper Gucci Mane still showed.
You can see the potential for this game to grow in future years.
